Who is Mestergruppen?

Mestergruppen AS is one of Scandinavia’s largest players in the building and construction industry, operating across a broad range of business areas, including building materials, housing, cabin production, project management, and surface treatment.

The group comprises around 1,500 member companies and 1,400 employees in its own operations. They are recognized for a strong focus on efficiency and modernization across their complex ecosystem of digital solutions. One big project within this modernization initiative was to automate regression and functional testing for the Microsoft ecosystem, particularly for D365.

The Challenges

When Mestergruppen migrated to Dynamics 365 F&O, system updates quickly became a major pain point. Microsoft’s One Version mandate, which introduces continuous updates to keep security and functionality current, meant that the team was required to test and validate regularly across multiple systems.

Linda Vibekk is the Platform Owner (ERP, D365) at Mestergruppen, and she and her team were facing several challenges:

  • All testing was manual, accounting for around 2,500 hours per year across more than 30 system versions.
  • Testing cycles stretched over a month and were often misaligned with key business periods and holidays.
  • Testing was managed by a small team with limited technical backgrounds, making code-based testing unrealistic.
  • Lack of standardization, meaning test scripts were outdated and inconsistently applied across departments.

The Solution

After consulting with their partners at Microsoft and Cepheo, Mestergruppen chose Leapwork over RSAT and other automation tools for its no-code capabilities and user-friendly design. Visual automation was critical to allow the non-technical team members, including Linda, to build and maintain automated tests.

Leapwork’s Professional Services team supported their setup, creating custom-built reusable sub-flows for Dynamics 365 F&O, and a library of test components, enabling Mestergruppen to automate test cases for finance processes, fixed assets, and validation.

What stood out about the Leapwork platform?

  • A no-code approach is accessible to non-technical users.
  • Implementation and ability to scale with reusable test components.
  • Direct support from Leapwork to assist with Dynamics 365 F&O.
  • Compatibility with the Microsoft ecosystem, including Azure DevOps and SharePoint.

"Leapwork makes it possible for people like me with no technical background to automate critical processes. It’s empowering, and it makes testing something to look forward to."

The Impact

Within months of implementing Leapwork, Mestergruppen saw results that fully validated their move to test automation. What began as a small initiative quickly transformed how the company approached quality assurance.

With Leapwork, Mestergruppen:

  • Automated 30% of finance tests in the first phase, built largely by non-technical staff.
  • Achieved a 35% reduction in testing effort for automated processes.
  • Saved around 45 minutes per test task on average, compared to the previous version cycle.

Linda has noted that with Leapwork, testing is now faster, more consistent, and built on real data rather than manipulated files. Automated validation, logs, and video recordings have strengthened quality and confidence across every release.

Beyond efficiency, the biggest change has been cultural, as business users now create and maintain tests themselves. Mestergruppen’s experience demonstrates how no-code test automation can empower business professionals to take ownership of quality assurance, even in complex ERP environments.
